A fire outbreak at the popular Terminus Market in Jos, Plateau State, on Saturday night destroyed over 10 shops despite the swift response of firefighters and emergency teams who worked to contain the blaze.
The fire reportedly broke out around 10:00 p.m., sending thick plumes of smoke into the night sky as flames spread through sections of the market, affecting shops and destroying valuable goods.
Eyewitness Silas Lawrenzo said the prompt intervention of emergency responders helped prevent the fire from escalating into a larger disaster.
"Their swift action limited the damage and averted what could have turned into widespread destruction across the market," Lawrenzo said.
He confirmed that no lives were lost in the incident, offering some relief amid the destruction.
Emergency teams from multiple agencies joined forces to battle the blaze, including the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the Plateau State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), the Federal Fire Service, and the Plateau State Fire Service.
Their coordinated efforts eventually brought the fire under control, though not before significant damage had been done.
A visit to the market by our correspondent on Sunday morning revealed that several shops and goods had been affected by the fire, with traders counting their losses and assessing the damage to their livelihoods.
The exact cause of the incident had yet to be confirmed as of the time of filing this report, with investigations expected to determine the origin of the blaze.
Efforts to reach the General Manager of Jos Main Market, Mangnan Yusuf Wamyil, were unsuccessful as his phone line was switched off, leaving questions about the market's fire safety measures and response protocols unanswered.
The incident comes just days after a similar fire outbreak last Tuesday gutted parts of the Plateau State College of Health Technology in Zawan community, Jos South Local Government Area.
That fire reduced the medical laboratory section to ashes and left students in distress, highlighting a troubling pattern of fire incidents in the state.
Traders at Terminus Market are now left to pick up the pieces, with many calling for improved fire safety measures and better emergency preparedness to prevent future occurrences.
The Plateau State Government has yet to issue an official statement regarding the fire or any plans to support affected traders.
