Bruno Fernandes has etched his name into Manchester United history by surpassing David Beckham's long-standing club record for the most assists in a single Premier League season, reaching 16 assists in the 2025/26 campaign during Sunday's 3-1 victory over Aston Villa.
Beckham's record of 15 assists, set during the 1999/00 season, had stood for over two decades until Fernandes finally eclipsed it with a masterful performance at Old Trafford.
The Portuguese playmaker notched his 15th assist of the current campaign when he delivered a pinpoint corner for Casemiro to head home in the 53rd minute.
That marked Fernandes' ninth dead-ball assist of the season.
He then produced his seventh assist from open play with a sublime pass for Matheus Cunha to put Michael Carrick's side 2-0 ahead, taking his tally to 16 and officially breaking the record.
Fernandes expressed his delight after the match, telling MUTV: "I'm obviously very happy to do that.
Like everyone in their own garden, I tried to do it like Beckham and was doing it.
Even if you're just swinging your arm, [I was doing it] like he used to do it."
The achievement places Fernandes in an elite category of Manchester United legends.
He is now just the third player in the club's Premier League era to reach 100 goals and 100 assists in all competitions, joining an exclusive group alongside Wayne Rooney and Ryan Giggs.
Fernandes could yet break the overall Premier League record for most assists in a single season, which stands at 20—jointly held by Thierry Henry (2002/03) and Kevin De Bruyne (2019/20).
With eight matches remaining in United's campaign, the Portuguese talisman needs just five more assists to set a new record of 21.
The record-breaking performance further cements Fernandes' status as one of the most influential players in Manchester United's modern history since his arrival at the club.
His consistency and creativity have made him indispensable to the team's attacking output, and this latest milestone adds to his growing legacy at Old Trafford.
