N100m Paid into IGP's Son Account in Error, Promptly Reversed – Police

IGP Kayode Egbetokun son N100 million bank error police explain

The Nigeria Police Force has clarified the circumstances surrounding the erroneous payment of N100 million into the bank account of Victor, the son of outgoing Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun. The Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Benjamin Hundeyin, explained that the transaction was a banking error that was immediately reversed upon discovery.

Speaking on Channels Television's programme 'Politics Today' on Monday, Hundeyin addressed the online reports which alleged that the funds originated from the Anambra State Government's security vote account. The police spokesman moved to set the record straight, detailing the proactive steps taken by the IGP's son. "You could remember when he (Omoyele Sowore) said N100 million was paid into the account of the son of the IGP. I called the son of the IGP immediately to know what was going on, and he explained," Hundeyin stated.

According to the FPRO, Victor noticed the unusual credit alert and acted with integrity. "He said he saw N100 million in his account, and he told his accounts officer to reverse the money immediately, which he did," Hundeyin explained. He emphasized that the transaction had nothing to do with Victor or his father and was simply a financial anomaly. Hundeyin further revealed that the young man went beyond just reversing the transaction. He printed out his statement of account as evidence and took the significant step of closing the account to prevent any future occurrence of such errors.

"He printed out his statement of account. He showed me. The young man was forced to close down that account. He has written a petition to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for that allegation to be investigated," the police spokesman added. ACP Hundeyin stressed that the money was immediately returned to the state government's account from which it originated, confirming that there was no wrongdoing on the part of the IGP's son or his family.
