The Lagos State Government has launched a full-scale investigation into an incident that occurred during the 11th edition of the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon on Saturday, where an ambulance struck a female non-athlete near the finish line.
In a statement released late Saturday, the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, provided official clarification on the circumstances surrounding the development, which has since gone viral on social media.
According to the statement, the victim came into contact with the ambulance while the vehicle was conveying athletes who had earlier required medical attention during the race. The incident occurred near the finishing line area of the marathon route.
"Officials immediately alerted the ambulance crew to stop upon noticing the situation. The emergency medical team promptly assessed and evacuated the affected individual for on-the-spot care before transferring her to a public health facility for further evaluation," Omotoso stated.
Authorities confirmed that the woman sustained bruises and complained of chest pains but was stabilized at the scene by emergency responders. Her vital signs were assessed to be stable, and she is currently receiving medical care while responding positively to treatment.
"The Ministry of Health and the Sports Commission are monitoring the situation, with senior government officials visiting the hospital. The patient is stable, and under close professional supervision," the statement added.
Earlier on Saturday, a viral video circulating online captured the moment the ambulance struck the individual during the race, sparking widespread concern among spectators and participants alike. Many took to social media to express outrage and demand answers from event organizers.
The Lagos State Government assured the public that a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident is already underway. Authorities are expected to review safety protocols and emergency response procedures for future editions of the marathon.
