POS operator shot dead by armed robbers at Upper Uwa Junction Edo State




A Point-of-Sale (POS) operator, Raphael Eletanye, aged 38, has been shot dead by suspected armed robbers during a late-night attack in Edo State.


The tragic incident occurred on Friday, January 3, at about 9:50 pm, at Upper Uwa Junction along Murtala Muhammed Way, where the victim was operating his POS business.


According to an eyewitness account, a gang of gunmen arrived at the location in an unregistered white minibus and attacked the POS operator before fleeing the scene with cash.


The Edo State Police Command confirmed the incident in an official statement issued by its Public Relations Officer, CSP Eno Ikoedem. 


“On 3rd January, 2026, at about 9:50 pm, the Command received a distress call from Upper Uwa Junction along MM Way reporting that an armed robbery incident involved a POS operator, one Raphael Eletanye, aged 38,” Ikoedem stated.

    She explained that officers from the Esigie Division, led by the Divisional Police Officer, were immediately mobilised to the scene after the report was received.


    According to preliminary investigations, the assailants shot the victim in the thigh before escaping with an unspecified amount of cash.


    “The victim was rushed to the hospital but was confirmed dead,” the police spokesperson added.


    Reacting to the incident, the Commissioner of Police in Edo State, Monday Agbonika, ordered a thorough investigation and directed operatives to identify and apprehend the perpetrators.


    The command urged members of the public with useful information to assist ongoing investigations by contacting the police through its 24-hour emergency lines.


    The police further reassured residents of Edo State of their commitment to reducing armed robbery and other criminal activities, noting that they continue to collaborate with sister security agencies to ensure the safety of law-abiding citizens.
