Nigeria's First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has stated her desire to be a positive case study and role model for younger girls, lamenting the current generation's lack of admirable figures to emulate. She made the remarks on Thursday at the inauguration of the "Sen. Oluremi Tinubu Dream Centre," an ICT facility at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife.
Speaking at the event, built by the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, in collaboration with NITDA, Tinubu highlighted the challenge of negative online narratives. “We live in an age where, even when people are doing well, out of envy, many untrue things are said about them on the internet. And our young people do not really see many people to emulate,” she stated.
The First Lady shared her own childhood dream of becoming a teacher, which she eventually achieved, urging young girls to have positive aspirations. “As young as I was then... I knew I wanted to be a teacher, and I ended up being one,” she recounted.
She described the new centre as a place to tell her life story, featuring a "storytelling room" and a small library. “This centre is not for girls alone; it is also for boys... This centre will tell young girls my story,” she added, encouraging youths not to be overly ambitious but to discover the purpose God has placed within them.
NITDA Director-General Kashifu Abdullahi said the centre would merge digital technology, AI, and storytelling to preserve history for future generations. Ooni Ogunwusi and OAU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Adebayo Bamire commended the First Lady's commitment to education and legacy.
