A stray bullet fired by an operative of the Department of State Services (DSS) has resulted in the death of one person and left two others injured in Abuja. The tragic incident occurred during an altercation stemming from a traffic dispute in Karmojiji village.
According to a Daily Trust report on January 30, 2026, the DSS operative, identified as Ajayi Abayomi, allegedly fired his pistol during a confrontation with a pickup truck driver whose broken-down vehicle caused a gridlock on January 19.
Witnesses narrated that the operative, driving a Peugeot 406, alighted from his car and slapped the driver of the stalled pickup. “The tension rose when Ibrahim Sarkin Samari rushed to the scene to find out what happened. Before we knew it, the DSS operative opened his car, brought out a pistol and pulled the trigger,” alleged witness Muazu Kabiru.
The bullet missed Ibrahim but struck 55-year-old Musa Adamu, a cleric and Arabic teacher seated nearby. It also injured Salisu Suleiman and Yakubu Samaila. Adamu was later confirmed dead at Federal Medical Centre, Jabi, while the two injured victims were treated and discharged.
An angry mob subsequently descended on the operative, vandalizing his vehicle before police from a nearby outpost intervened. The DSS officer reportedly escaped, and his car was towed to the police station. A source at the DSS offered a different account, claiming “the operative defended himself with his rifle to avoid being lynched.”
Community sources confirmed that the DSS FCT Directorate has taken responsibility, paying the hospital bills and initiating discussions on compensation (Diyya) for the deceased's family. The late Adamu is survived by two wives and seven children. A police source confirmed the case has been transferred to the FCT Command, noting “the officer remains at large.”
