A twin-propeller aircraft carrying 15 people, including Colombian lawmaker Diogenes Quintero, crashed in a mountainous region near the Venezuelan border on January 28, with no survivors. The plane, departing from Cúcuta, lost contact with air traffic control shortly before its scheduled landing in Ocaña.
According to AFP, an aviation official confirmed there were "no survivors" among the 13 passengers and two crew members. The rugged, remote area is known for difficult terrain, unpredictable weather, and the presence of the National Liberation Army (ELN) guerrilla group.
The Colombian Air Force was deployed to locate the wreckage and recover the bodies. Local parliamentarian Wilmer Carrillo expressed deep concern, noting that candidate Carlos Salcedo and their teams were also on the flight.
This tragedy adds to a history of fatal aviation incidents in Colombia involving public figures. In January 2025, a private plane crash killed six, including popular singer Yeison Jiménez.
