Detained Nollywood actress Angela Okorie has been granted bail by the Federal High Court in Abuja, days after being remanded in Suleja prison over alleged cyberstalking and criminal defamation of colleague Mercy Johnson Okojie.
Justice Emeka Nwite granted Okorie bail at N5 million with one surety in like sum on Friday, despite opposition from the prosecution. The judge held that there was no concrete evidence before the court to prove she would jump bail if released.
“Therefore, I am minded to grant the bail in the interest of justice,” Justice Nwite stated, emphasizing that bail is at the court's discretion and must be exercised judicially.
The court imposed strict conditions: the sole surety must be a level 13 civil servant who must submit an affidavit of means, appointment letter, and last promotion letter. The surety’s residence will be verified, and both Okorie and the surety must submit passport photographs to the court registrar.
Okorie was re-arraigned on a seven-count amended charge marked FHC/ABJ/CR/278/2025, to which she pleaded not guilty. She was alleged to have conspired with one Ifeoma Mbonu (now at large) to commit cyberstalking by calling Mercy Johnson a “blood-sucking demon” on Instagram and TikTok.
The case stemmed from a petition by Mercy Johnson’s lawyer dated May 14, 2025, which described Okorie’s posts as “criminal and defamatory” with intent to cause “irreparable reputational injury, incite hatred, provoke unrest among the public, and further harass and emotionally traumatize our client.”
The matter was adjourned to March 23 for trial, but Okorie will remain in Suleja prison until she perfects her bail conditions.
