The Nigerian Army has explained what happened during a violent communal clash in Lamurde Local Government Area of Adamawa State. The Army said its troops killed eight armed militia members, not women, as claimed in reports circulating online.
The explanation was given by Captain Olusegun Abidoye, the Acting Assistant Director of Army Public Relations, in a statement on Tuesday.
According to a report by Leadership News on Wednesday 9 December, 2025, he said the gunmen were part of a militia group involved in a land dispute between the Chobo and Bachama communities.
Abidoye stated that troops first engaged three armed men during a firefight, and the remaining attackers fled. Later, security operatives traced their withdrawal route and found five more dead militia members alongside a motorcycle.
He also described an online report accusing the Brigade commander of wrongdoing as false and misleading. He explained that the commander was attending a virtual operational briefing at the time and was nowhere near the clash.
Troops were said to have moved into the affected areas around 1:30 am on Monday after receiving reports of fresh fighting. During the response, some women blocked the road while armed groups shot into the air within the community, creating confusion.
Abidoye stressed that the Army did not shoot any woman. He said two female corpses brought forward by residents were victims of stray bullets fired by local militias who were not properly trained to handle weapons.
The Army assured that normalcy has since been restored.
The Army urged communities to remain calm and work with security agencies to prevent further violence.
