The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has announced a radical new performance-based payment system for waste evacuation contractors, declaring an end to the era of paying for substandard services in the nation's capital.
Wike issued the stern warning during an interactive meeting with 54 newly engaged solid waste evacuation companies in Abuja on Friday. He revealed that a special task force will be immediately established to rigorously monitor the contractors' operations, with payments being made strictly upon verification of satisfactory work.
Emphasizing that the FCT would no longer tolerate excuses for poor performance, the minister urged the contractors to bring about an immediate and visible improvement in the city's sanitation. “Management of waste is a very difficult job. So, I want to plead with you to see it as an assignment for the development of our capital city,” Wike stated, acknowledging the challenge while setting clear expectations.

The minister assured them of prompt payment for jobs well done, stating, “It’s a job that you applied for; nobody forced you, and I assure you that your payment is not a problem. Do the job as required and do it very well. There will be no favouritism. Your job is what will speak for you, and you must get the job done.”
In a clear departure from past practices, Wike declared that it would not be "business as usual," warning that excuses related to faulty equipment would no longer be accepted. He also directed the Director of Procurement to conduct immediate capacity checks on companies allocated more than one operational site to ensure they have the required resources.
Furthermore, Wike introduced a public feedback mechanism, urging FCT residents to report the contractors' performance directly to the government. He assured that such reports would be a key determinant in which contractors ultimately get paid, putting the power of oversight partially in the hands of the citizens.
