A former Manchester United scout has launched a scathing critique of the club's recent transfer strategy, labelling a £25 million signing a "dud" and highlighting the costly error of selling a future star for a fraction of his value.
According to Piotr Sadowski, who worked as a scout for seven years at Old Trafford before leaving in August 2024, the club is stuck in a cycle of buying expensive, "ready-made players" due to a lack of faith in its own academy. Sadowski made these revelations in an interview with Polish publication Przeglad Sportowy.
When the discussion turned to the £25 million February signing of Patrick Dorgu from Lecce, Sadowski did not hold back. “A dud, I definitely agree,” he stated. “And he was brought in for €30 million. Honestly, having recently worked at Blackburn Rovers and operating on a much lower transfer budget, I would have had no problem finding a few players at Dortmund’s level for Manchester United, but not for €30m.”

The former scout also pinpointed the sale of Alvaro Carreras as a monumental blunder. United sold the left-back to Benfica for just £5.1m, only for Real Madrid to sign him a year later for a staggering £42m. “Carreras is a truly top-class player. There’s a good chance he’ll become the best, or one of the best, left-backs in the world,” Sadowski said. “It was a huge mistake for United to let him go.”**
Sadowski argued that the club's prolonged crisis has created a fear of promoting youth, leading to a disconnect in player development. He cited the successes of former academy players like Anthony Elanga at Nottingham Forest as evidence that United are letting the wrong players leave.
