Panic has gripped the medical community in Anambra State following the abduction of a consultant neurosurgeon, identified as Dr. Mbanugo T., by suspected kidnappers in Uruagu, Nnewi North Local Government Area.
The incident reportedly occurred late Thursday night along the New Nnewi–Oba Road, when armed men intercepted the doctor’s vehicle and whisked him away to an unknown destination.
A senior official of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) in Anambra, who confirmed the incident on Friday, said the association had already notified relevant government and security agencies about the abduction. “He was kidnapped by armed assailants along the New Nnewi-Oba Road in the evening of Thursday,” the source disclosed.
The source urged colleagues and residents to stay vigilant, adding, “We have been assured that the kidnappers are being tracked. Please let us remember Dr. Mbanugo in our prayers and remain security conscious. The evil days are not yet over.”
Confirming the development, the Anambra State Police Command spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said the Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, had ordered an intensive manhunt for the kidnappers and directed tactical units to ensure the safe rescue of the victim.
Ikenga said, “The command has received a report of the abduction of a medical doctor at Uruagu, Nnewi. Preliminary information indicates that the incident occurred on October 30, 2025, under yet-to-be-ascertained circumstances. The Commissioner of Police has ordered a full-scale investigation and assured the public that every effort is being made to ensure the swift resolution of the case.”
He urged residents, particularly in Nnewi and surrounding communities, to remain calm and cooperate with security operatives by providing credible information that could aid the investigation.
The incident adds to growing concerns over rising cases of abductions targeting professionals in southern Nigeria. Just last week, gunmen abducted a truck driver, Tobi Oluwatuyi, along the Akure-Owo Expressway in Ondo State, further underscoring Nigeria’s worsening insecurity crisis.
