A devastating late-night fire engulfed a residential duplex in Ibadan, Oyo State, destroying property worth millions of naira but miraculously sparing lives.



The incident, which occurred on Friday night at Hazmat Street, Kuola, off Akala Expressway, left the upper floor of a duplex and an adjoining two-bedroom flat in ruins.

According to reports from the Oyo State Fire Service, firefighters responded swiftly after receiving the distress call, successfully preventing the flames from spreading to the ground floor and nearby buildings. The emergency operation was supported by teams from the Federal Fire Service and Sweetco Fire Service, ensuring a coordinated and timely response.


Speaking on Saturday, the Chairman of the Oyo State Fire Service, Hon. Maroof Akinwande, confirmed the incident, noting that security operatives from the Kuola Police Division were also on site to maintain order and facilitate firefighting efforts.


Akinwande revealed that preliminary investigations linked the cause of the inferno to an unattended lit mosquito coil, which reportedly came into contact with flammable materials inside the residence.

    He emphasized the importance of fire safety, warning residents against leaving open flames or ignition sources unattended, especially during nighttime.


    While the fire caused significant material loss, no lives were lost, and no injuries were reported. The incident has, however, reignited calls for improved fire awareness and adherence to safety regulations within residential areas across Oyo State.


    The Oyo State Fire Service reiterated its commitment to responding promptly to emergencies and encouraged residents to keep emergency hotlines handy to reduce property loss in similar situations.
