Labour Party’s former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has finally addressed growing speculations suggesting that he worked under the regime of late Nigerian military ruler, General Sani Abacha.
During a live interview on Channels TV’s Sunday Politics, Obi stated categorically that he never worked with, met, or had any form of personal relationship with the late Head of State.
The clarification comes in response to allegations recently made by political commentator and former presidential aide, Reno Omokri, who accused Obi of having ties to the Abacha government.
Setting the record straight, Obi explained that his only involvement during Abacha’s regime was a brief contribution aimed at solving port congestion issues when the economy was paralyzed due to restricted access at Nigerian ports.
He narrated:
“When Abacha took over, ports were closed. Goods couldn’t be cleared, nor exported. So, as private stakeholders, we went to meet the Minister of Finance and discussed the crisis,” Obi said.
According to him, this engagement led to the formation of a temporary committee, as directed by the government, which included some industry stakeholders to assist in decongesting Nigerian ports.
“That was all. I never worked with or met Abacha. Everything I’ve done is in the public domain,” he stated firmly.
He added that he had even criticized the Nigerian Ports Authority in past public comments, calling it “the only port authority in the world with an office outside its country of operation.”
Peter Obi’s statement seeks to counter narratives questioning his political integrity and transparency — two qualities he has consistently emphasized throughout his public life.
The interview has since gone viral, with many supporters applauding his honesty, while critics continue to push for deeper scrutiny of all political figures in the country.
