In a bold political move that could reshape Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, key opposition figures — including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, and ex-Senate President David Mark — have officially adopted the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as the coalition's platform to unseat President Bola Tinubu.
According to a report by The Punch, the new coalition was formally launched at the Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja, with David Mark announced as the interim National Chairman of ADC and Rauf Aregbesola as interim Secretary.
This development follows months of speculation and strategic political dialogues aimed at consolidating opposition efforts. The coalition is a response to the growing frustration among Nigerians over inflation, insecurity, and what they call “a government disconnected from the masses.”
In his speech, David Mark said the coalition aims to “rebuild the crumbling pillars of Nigeria’s democracy” and called the current administration “a government that disdains accountability.” He added that the legislature has become a “cheerleading institution” instead of holding the executive accountable.
However, not everyone in the ADC is in support. The party’s former presidential candidate Dumebi Kachikwu accused the coalition of hijacking the party and claimed the new leadership lacks the capacity to deliver results.
Meanwhile, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) dismissed the new alliance as a gathering of political retirees, vowing that the 2027 elections will prove the popularity of the Tinubu administration.
