Customs intercepts 1,682 wraps of cannabis concealed inside corpse

Nigerian pilgrims have begun their return journey from Saudi Arabia after the successful conclusion of the 2025 Hajj, a season marked by both spiritual joy and tragic loss.

Saudi Arabia officially ended this year’s Hajj on Monday, June 9, after over 1.67 million Muslims completed the sacred rites, including thousands of Nigerians. 

The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria confirmed the start of return flights for Nigerian pilgrims on the same day.

Pilgrims expressed deep gratitude and fulfillment for the opportunity to perform one of Islam’s five pillars. However, the return journey was tinged with sorrow as seven Nigerian pilgrims died during the Hajj.

According to medical teams in Saudi Arabia, the deaths—recorded from states including Oyo, Abia, Edo, Plateau, and Kano—were mostly due to cardiac arrest and related complications.

While the 2025 death toll was significantly lower than 2024’s 30 recorded deaths, the loss was still deeply felt. The deceased were buried in Saudi Arabia in accordance with Islamic rites.

In a statement released by Deputy Emir of the Makkah Region, Prince Saud bin Mishaal, the Saudi government praised the efficient management and security of the pilgrimage, crediting King Salman bin Abdulaziz and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman for a peaceful and safe Hajj season.

“The pilgrims performed their rites in safety and peace, thanks to the distinguished execution of operational plans,” Mishaal stated. He further noted that planning for the 2026 Hajj season would begin immediately, ensuring continued improvement in service delivery and security for pilgrims worldwide.

According to official statistics, 1,506,576 foreign pilgrims participated, along with 166,654 domestic pilgrims. The total comprised 877,841 male and 795,389 female pilgrims.

As the Nigerian pilgrims begin arriving home, the mixed emotions of celebration and mourning remain a stark reminder of the physical and spiritual toll of the Hajj. Authorities have promised to conduct post-Hajj assessments to improve safety and medical services in future pilgrimages.
