FG Jobs Frenzy: 450,000 Nigerians Compete for Just 10,000 Positions in 2025 Recruitment Rush

Thousands of Nigerians apply for 10,000 federal government jobs in 2025 recruitment exercise

Nigeria’s ongoing employment crisis came into sharp focus as over 450,000 Nigerians applied for less than 10,000 Federal Government jobs, highlighting the nation’s escalating youth unemployment and job scarcity.

In January 2025, the Federal Civil Service Commission (FCSC) began recruiting for various roles across over 70 departments, including Administrative Officers, Medical Laboratory Scientists, Dentists, Engineers, and Foreign Affairs Officers.

According to a report by The PUNCH, the recruitment campaign was formally announced via a newspaper advertorial signed by Director of Recruitment and Appointment, Ogaba Ede. Applications were originally set to close on March 10, but the deadline was later extended to March 17, 2025, due to overwhelming demand and reported technical hitches with the portal.

Applicants across the country flooded the online portal despite widespread technical glitches, with many lamenting their inability to access or submit applications successfully.

An anonymous senior official at the commission disclosed that only shortlisted candidates will receive messages to write a Computer-Based Test (CBT) in their respective states. “Over 450,000 applied for the last recruitment exercise. We have fewer than 10,000 vacancies,” the official confirmed.

“There will be no rescheduling for the CBT. Candidates will see their results immediately after the exams,” he added.

When contacted, the FCSC’s Head of Press and Public Relations, Taiwo Hassan, said official communication regarding the recruitment will be made public in due course.

This surge in job applications underscores not only the desperate demand for federal employment but also the urgent need for economic reform and youth empowerment strategies to absorb Nigeria’s growing labor force.
