The Edo State Government has taken urgent steps to combat a growing diphtheria outbreak, receiving 90 doses of anti-diphtheria vaccines, with 70 of them deployed to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH).

Dr. Cyril Oshiomhole, the state’s Commissioner for Health, disclosed this during a press briefing on Monday.
He explained that the vaccines were sourced in collaboration with the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) and the Delta State Ministry of Health, due to the disease spreading faster than expected.
“We spoke with the DG of NCDC who released 70 doses, and Delta State gave us another 20. We’re grateful for the support,” said Oshiomhole.

The commissioner raised concern that some infected individuals had reportedly received full immunization in the past, signaling the need for a broader approach. “We are seeking clearance to vaccinate children above five years old and possibly adults, including health workers,” he added.
The state is also monitoring case trends to determine further emergency response strategies. Authorities are focusing on early detection, isolation, and widespread immunization to contain the threat.
Governor Monday Okpebholo has approved additional resources for emergency care, including beds, fittings, and other critical equipment for affected treatment centers.
Diphtheria is a potentially fatal bacterial infection that spreads through respiratory droplets. In recent months, parts of Nigeria have reported increased cases, particularly in underserved communities with low immunization coverage.

The Commissioner urged residents to remain vigilant, ensure their children are immunized, and immediately report symptoms such as sore throat, fever, and difficulty breathing.
Public health experts continue to call for aggressive sensitization campaigns to educate citizens on prevention, hygiene, and the benefits of vaccination.
