“A Bold Move!” — APC Celebrates Gov. Umo Eno’s Defection, Promises Full Inclusion

APC welcomes Umo Eno defection from PDP to ruling party

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has officially welcomed Akwa Ibom State Governor, Umo Eno, into its ranks following his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), describing it as a “thoughtful decision” that will drive the state's progress.

In a statement posted on Friday by APC National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, and titled “APC Welcomes Akwa Ibom State Governor, Umo Eno, Into Party”, the National Working Committee expressed delight over the development and reassured the governor of his full integration into the ruling party.

“The National Working Committee of the APC under the leadership of Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje is delighted at the news of Governor Umo Eno’s decision to join our great party,” the statement read.

“We are confident that his thoughtful decision will ensure the greater progress of Akwa Ibom State and its people,” it added.

Governor Eno’s defection marks a significant political realignment in Nigeria’s South-South region. The governor confirmed his exit from the PDP during a press engagement, stating that his move was to support President Bola Tinubu’s economic reforms.

“We are not joining the APC from a position of weakness, we are joining from a position of strength,” Eno declared.

The move follows weeks of speculation and comes shortly after Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State also defected to the APC. Governor Eno had previously hinted at his intention, instructing cabinet members two weeks ago to either follow him to the APC or resign.

Sources within Akwa Ibom suggest that the shift may redefine the political dynamics in the state ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Political analysts believe that Eno’s defection could boost the APC's standing in the region, especially with the governor now aligning himself with President Tinubu’s "Renewed Hope Agenda."

The APC statement also promised close collaboration with Governor Eno in implementing people-centered reforms. “Our great party assures the governor of its fullest cooperation and accommodation in the APC family as we continue to grow the party,” the statement concluded.

With this move, all eyes are now on Akwa Ibom as the political landscape continues to evolve.
