President Tinubu Sends Delegation, Mobilizes Aid as Niger Floods Kill 151 and Displace Thousands
President Bola Tinubu has dispatched a federal delegation to Niger State following a devastating flood that killed at least 151 people and left over 3,000 displaced in Mokwa and surrounding communities. The disaster, which also destroyed more than 260 homes, key bridges, and township roads, has been described as one of the worst in the state’s history.
According to a statement signed by Rabiu Ibrahim, media aide to the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Tinubu expressed deep sadness over the tragic incident. The high-level delegation led by Information Minister Mohammed Idris and the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Prof. Nentawe Goshwe Yilwatda, delivered the President’s message of condolence during a visit to the Niger State Deputy Governor, Yakubu Garba.

“We are here on the directive of Mr. President, Bola Tinubu, to commiserate with the government and people of Niger State on the disaster that struck Mokwa Local Government,” said Idris. “Mr. President is personally saddened and has ordered that all federal resources be immediately deployed.”
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has conducted a full assessment of the destruction and has begun delivering urgent humanitarian support. Efforts include recovery of bodies, provision of food and shelter, and coordinated aid distribution in collaboration with state authorities.
Additionally, Tinubu has directed the National Orientation Agency (NOA) to scale up flood-preparedness sensitization in disaster-prone areas, aiming to prevent or mitigate future disasters.
The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs confirmed that the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons will now lead continued assistance to those affected.
Deputy Governor Garba appreciated the swift federal response, calling the flood “one of the most destructive in recent memory.” He noted that over 503 households across three communities were impacted, and that key access roads remain cut off.
