A shocking incident in Osogbo, Osun State, has sparked public outrage after a 17-year-old girl was allegedly burned with a hot pressing iron by a local tailor over a dispute about a poorly sewn dress.
The victim, whose name is withheld due to her age, visited Iya Abdullahi’s shop in the Obelawo area on Wednesday to return a dress she found too short. Instead of making adjustments, the tailor began verbally abusing her and then attacked her with a stick when the girl protested. The situation escalated when the tailor retrieved a scalding hot iron and pressed it against the teenager’s body in multiple places.
“She took a hot pressing iron and used it to press my body in different places,” the victim recounted from her hospital bed, displaying painful burns.
The Value Female Network (VFN), a local NGO, has demanded swift justice. In a report submitted to The Guardian and forwarded to the Ministry of Justice, VFN Executive Director Dr. Costly Aderibigbe-Saba decried the tailor’s actions and raised concerns about interference by the tailor’s husband, a police officer.
“How did a minor clothing dispute escalate into a violent attack on a teenage girl?” Dr. Aderibigbe-Saba asked, calling for an impartial investigation and prosecution.
As of press time, the teenager is receiving treatment for burns and shock at a local hospital. The Osun State police command has been urged to intervene promptly, ensure the victim’s protection, and hold the perpetrator accountable under child protection laws.
This grim case highlights risks faced by vulnerable minors in informal service settings and underscores the need for stronger enforcement of gender-based violence and child protection statutes in Nigeria. Community advocates are calling on state authorities to launch public awareness campaigns and regulatory checks in artisan workshops.
