A civic organization, Eagle Brain Youth Transformative and Development Initiative (EBYTDI), has decried the alarming state of the justice system in Kaduna State, alleging that hundreds of detainees are languishing in prison for years without trial due to lack of logistics.
In a statement by the group’s Executive Director, Daniel Ejembi, he cited the case of Emmanuel Musa, a resident of Ungwan Gajere, Maraban Rido, Kaduna, who has been held without trial since 2018. Musa was arrested after protecting a suspected bandit from mob lynching, insisting the suspect be handed over to security operatives. Instead of being commended for his lawful conduct, he was detained and has since spent six years behind bars with no court appearance.
According to Ejembi, Musa’s case is just one of many. “Many detainees in Kaduna prisons have never seen a courtroom, not because of legal delays, but because the correctional centres lack basic logistics — vehicles, fuel, and personnel — to transport inmates to court,” he said.
The group described the situation as a gross violation of human rights, calling it a collapse of justice. They accused the Kaduna State Correctional Service of institutional negligence and demanded accountability from the Ministry of Justice, the Judiciary, and the Nigerian Correctional Service.
EBYTDI urged Governor Uba Sani, the Chief Judge of Kaduna, and the Nigerian Human Rights Commission to intervene, provide transportation logistics, and prioritize cases of detainees held without trial.
