Bayelsa PDP crisis: Pro-Wike faction threatens Governor Diri over arrest of political ally

A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Bayelsa State, loyal to Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike, has threatened to expel Governor Douye Diri over the arrest of a pro-Wike social media influencer, Miss Awudumu Reigneth.

According to a statement by the group’s acting Publicity Secretary, Derri Alasuote Wright, Reigneth was arrested for alleged cyberbullying after accusing Governor Diri of orchestrating an attack on a pro-Wike political group’s event. The faction described the charges as politically motivated and demanded her immediate release.

“We will not tolerate the suppression of our members’ rights. If Governor Diri fails to secure her release, we will consider expelling him from the party,” the statement read. The group also alleged that Diri is planning to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC) and is deliberately weakening the PDP in Bayelsa.

Governor Diri’s Chief Press Secretary, Daniel Alabrah, confirmed the arrest but referred inquiries to the police, calling it a “police matter.” Efforts to reach Bayelsa Police spokesman Musa Mohammed were unsuccessful.

The crisis threatens PDP’s reconciliation efforts, with the pro-Wike faction urging civil society groups to intervene.
