A military court in Congo has sentenced 37 individuals, including three Americans, to death after convicting them for their roles in a failed coup attempt.
The verdict, handed down in Kinshasa on Friday, includes charges of attempted coup, terrorism, and criminal association.

The convicted group, mostly Congolese nationals, also includes a Briton, Belgian, and Canadian. They now have five days to appeal the court’s decision.
The coup attempt, which took place in May, targeted the presidential palace and close allies of President Felix Tshisekedi.
Six people were killed during the attack led by opposition figure Christian Malanga, who was fatally shot after resisting arrest.
Among those sentenced is Malanga’s 21-year-old son, Marcel Malanga, a U.S. citizen, along with two other Americans.

Marcel’s mother, Brittney Sawyer, maintains her son is innocent, stating he was only following his father. Congo reinstated the death penalty earlier this year in response to increasing violence and militant attacks.
