UK MPs Rule Boris Johnson Deceived Parliament on Lockdown-Violating Parties, Escapes Formal Action

UK MPs ruled that Boris Johnson knowingly deceived them regarding Covid lockdown-violating parties at Downing Street during his tenure as prime minister. 

The parliamentary committee stated that Johnson engaged in repeated contempt for parliament and attempted to undermine the parliamentary process, leading to his potential suspension as an MP for 90 days. 

Nevertheless, he escaped formal action by resigning before the vote. Despite the fact that the committee has more members belonging to his own party, Johnson accused it of conducting a political conspiracy against him prior to the report's publication. 

The Prime Minister, who is unrepentant, decried the committee's findings as "anti-democratic" and described it as a protracted political assassination aimed at him. 

According to AFP report, Johnson's Uxbridge and South Ruislip constituency was held in the December 2019 general election, and although his Conservative party won by a landslide, he only had a 7,200-vote majority. With the Tories trailing in the polls against Labour, it is unclear whether he would have won. 

The "Partygate" scandal resulted in fines for Johnson and many government officials after they violated social distancing regulations intended to limit the spread of Covid-19. The scandal elicited public outrage, notably among the bereaved families of those who perished.
