Following his win in the Dr. Niyi Oriolowo National Blitz Chess Championship, FIDE Master, Abimbola Osunfuyi, has won the rapid chess event of the championship with a total of 7.5 points from the 9 rounds tournament.

Osunfuyi has been in great form and has been rewarded with two tournament wins already this year.

Just as it happened in the blitz tournament, Osunfuyi was pushed hard to the very end by Udeme Edet, who came second with 6.5 points. Udeme tied with veteran Rotimi Dashaolu who also ended with 6.5 points, proving that the old dog still bites.

Despite sharing points with Udeme, the tie break system adopted at the tournament, placed Dashaolu in 3rd position at the end of the 9 rounds. This was the same for Ogosi Raphael-Mary who also had 6.5 points but took the 4th position.

Akande Temitope, who came second in the blitz tournament, took the 5th position in the rapid tournament with 6 points.

It was not the best of tournaments for International Master Femi Balogun as he could only gather 5.5 points to take the 9th position.

The maiden edition of the Dr. Niyi Oriolowo National Blitz and Rapid Chess Championship was successful at providing a new standard and rated competition platform for Nigerian chess players. Punch
