In Bayelsa: NSCDC personnel rapes 2 underage sisters


An operative of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), serving under the Bayelsa State Command (name withheld) is presently in police custody after he defiled two sisters, aged 12 and 10.


It was gathered that the NSCDC officer who is attached to an oil surveillance houseboat in the creeks of Nembe Local Government Area, lured the underage girls at separate times to his apartment in Nembe-Bassambiri community where he raped the girls.

The Guardian gathered that the family of the girls is under intense pressure to accept monetary inducement to cover up the matter, even though the case has been reported at the Police in the area. According to the mother of the victims (name withheld) who confirmed the incidence to The Guardian, the sad occurence is causing the children untold psychological trauma.


The Bayelsa State chapter of the Civil Liberties Organization (CLO) has warned against sweeping the matter under the carpert. CLO called for the immediate transfer of the matter to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Yenagoa for investigation and prosecution.


State Chairman of CLO, Nengi James-Eriworio, while reacting to the incident, described act as shameful and unbecoming particularly for a law enforcement officer and challenged FIDA, the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) and others to take up the matter to ensure that justice is done.
