Ex-Labour Party Chair Julius Abure Rules Out Backing Peter Obi Ahead of 2027 Elections

Former National Chairman of the Labour Party, Julius Abure, has declared that he will not support Peter Obi's presidential ambition under the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in 2027, expressing readiness to align with President Bola Tinubu or former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar instead.

In an exclusive interview with The PUNCH, Abure stated that his ultimate political decision will depend on an upcoming Supreme Court ruling concerning the Labour Party's leadership structure, as well as alignment with his political interests.

Abure accused Obi and Abia State Governor Alex Otti of dismantling the party’s grassroots organization and ruining the goodwill built during the 2023 campaign cycle.

In response, the NDC Presidential Campaign Council spokesperson, Constance Ikokwu, and Obi’s media aide, Idris Zekeri, dismissed Abure's statements, maintaining that the campaign has moved past internal party disputes.

They emphasized that Obi remains fully dedicated to building a broad national coalition focused on addressing Nigeria's socio-economic challenges ahead of the 2027 presidential poll.

"I am very sure that I wouldn’t support Peter Obi for the 2027 general election. But I am open to an alignment with others... He has squandered his goodwill and mismanaged all the gains he had in 2023." — Julius Abure
