Why Dangote Petrol Price vs Marketers is Trending?

Nigeria’s downstream petroleum sector is undergoing intense commercial competition following Dangote Petroleum Refinery's decision to slash its wholesale petrol (PMS) depot price to ₦1,290 per litre, directly undercutting third-party depot owners and independent marketers.

The price adjustment has ignited national business interest due to several major market shifts:

  • Undercutting Third-Party Depots: Dangote reduced its Lagos depot price by ₦18 (from ₦1,308 per litre) to ₦1,290 per litre. This makes it the cheapest wholesale petrol source in the Lagos zone, forcing major depot operators like Pinnacle and Rainoil to lower their rates to ₦1,300, while MRS and NIPCO sell at ₦1,310 per litre.

  • Declining Landing Costs Nationwide: Market data reveals that despite fluctuations in global crude oil prices, local depot pricing across major maritime hubs—Lagos, Port Harcourt, and Calabar—has steadily declined. Independent marketers across regional hubs are adjusting retail pump prices downward to stay competitive with Dangote's distribution pipeline.

  • Direct-Sale Pressure on Intermediaries: The price reduction intensifies the ongoing struggle between Dangote Refinery and petroleum marketing associations (such as IPMAN and MOMAN). As Dangote scales direct distribution to major retail networks, third-party depot intermediaries face shrinking profit margins, accelerating calls for a fully deregulated, competitive domestic supply chain.
