Air Peace Chairman Allen Onyema has raised an alarm over an existential crisis confronting Nigeria’s domestic aviation sector, warning that several operating airlines could collapse within the next 30 days without immediate government intervention.
Speaking on the sidelines of the book launch for *Pathways, Pilgrimage and Destiny*, the biography of Med-View Airline Chairman Muneer Bankole, Onyema described airline operations in Nigeria as capital-intensive, high-risk, and increasingly unviable under current economic parameters.
Addressing the controversy surrounding the remittance of the five percent Ticket and Cargo Sales Charge (TSC), Onyema clarified that domestic carriers are not refusing statutory levies.

Instead, he called for a restructured, fixed-unit collection model worked out jointly with the Federal Ministry of Aviation and the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) to replace burdensome calculations on total airfares.
He also condemned recent threats by labor unions to picket airlines, characterizing the moves as unwarranted intimidation given ongoing regulatory discussions.
Highlighting harsh operational headwinds—including high borrowing interest rates, inadequate airport infrastructure, costly bird strikes, and multiple taxes—Onyema noted that over 50 Nigerian airlines have collapsed in past decades.
He urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to institute targeted policy interventions to safeguard indigenous carriers and protect the country's aviation ecosystem from further closures.
