Governor Adeleke Accuses Osun Police Command of Shielding Violent Political Thugs

Osun State Governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke, has demanded the immediate arrest and prosecution of political thugs behind recent violent crimes across the state, warning that recurring armed attacks will no longer be tolerated.

Receiving a high-powered police delegation led by the Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of the ICT Department, DIG Adegoke Fayoade, at the Government House in Osogbo, Adeleke launched a scathing critique of the state's security architecture.

Flanked by his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, the governor explicitly accused the Osun State Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Gotan, of gross negligence and partiality, renewing his official call for Gotan's immediate redeployment.

The governor listed a string of unresolved political assassinations that occurred within recent weeks—including the murders of Eluyera at Ikire, Ezekiel at Ilobu, and Aderogba at Esa Oke—lamenting that despite the suspects being widely known, no arrests have been made.

Adeleke further alleged that armed political thugs have been driving through various towns shooting sporadically and destroying Accord Party billboards while police operatives deliberately look away.

He claimed a clear pattern of selective enforcement exists in Osun, where police units are eager to detain Accord members on trivial grounds but fail to act when opposition thugs unleash fatal violence.

"You visit us at a time some policemen are openly known to be collaborating with political thugs to unleash violence on our people," Governor Adeleke stated. "Only in Osun State do we have police operatives eager to arrest Accord members on the most minor of grounds but have yet to arrest a single suspect in a series of murders."

Responding to the allegations, DIG Fayoade assured the state government that Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, had issued definitive directives to ensure that acts of brigandage and murder are fully investigated, regardless of political affiliation.

Fayoade promised that the upcoming 2026 Osun State gubernatorial election will be conducted under a peaceful atmosphere, citing recent successful, orderly elections in Ekiti and Anambra as the standard law enforcement intends to follow.

He maintained that Commissioner Gotan and his men would be made to operate strictly in accordance with constitutional provisions and the rule of law to guarantee public safety before the polls.
