Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has officially declared his intention to contest in the 2027 presidential election.
Making his announcement during a massive "Unity Mega Rally" at the historic Mapo Hall in Ibadan, Makinde revealed that he will be running under a newly formed political coalition between the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Allied Peoples’ Movement (APM).
The strategic alliance was formalized earlier in the day when leaders from both parties signed a Memorandum of Understanding at the PDP South-West Secretariat in Ibadan.

With this bold move, Makinde joins other prominent political figures, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Labour Party’s Peter Obi, who are expected to challenge President Bola Tinubu in the upcoming general elections.
Makinde used his declaration speech to warn citizens about the dangers of a shrinking political landscape, stating that opposition forces must unite to safeguard the nation’s democracy.
"Today, I, Oluseyi Abiodun Makinde, FNSE, announce my candidacy for the position of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria under the PDP/APM alliance," the governor announced to the roaring crowd. "We have witnessed the continuous meddling in the affairs of opposition parties in our dear country with the aim of taking Nigeria to a one-party system. Without a multiparty system, there is no democracy."
The governor lamented the country's worsening security and economic situations, emphasizing that the "Reset Nigeria Movement" was created to give everyday citizens a viable alternative direction.
"The opposition in Nigeria is not just the political parties. It is the everyday Nigerian for whom the country does not work," Makinde added, urging the public to reject political apathy.
Former Osun State Governor, Olagunsoye Oyinlola, and other top political stakeholders present at the rally voiced their strong support for the coalition, citing the current administration's failure to deliver on its 2023 campaign promises as the driving force behind the new alliance.
