Medical services have been disrupted at the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital following allegations that operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission harassed and assaulted senior medical staff. Prof. Eyo Ekpe, a prominent Professor of Cardiothoracic Surgery, accused the anti-graft agency of physical intimidation during a controversial attempt to arrest him over a fraudulent medical document.
The crisis began when EFCC agents arrived at the hospital to verify a medical report submitted by a suspect facing trial.
Prof. Ekpe, who serves as the Deputy Chairman of the Medical Advisory Committee, discovered that the document was entirely fake, featuring an outdated letterhead and the name of a doctor who does not work at the facility.

Despite drafting a response confirming the forgery, armed EFCC operatives allegedly attempted to force Ekpe into custody before the document could be officially cleared by the hospital's Chief Medical Director.
According to an investigative report, the situation escalated into a physical altercation on the hospital walkways as defensive staff members tried to protect the professor.
"They dragged me to the walkway, and I started crying. Staff members who heard me rushed out," Prof. Ekpe alleged. "They said I must not talk to anyone. They held guns behind and in front of me while dragging me."
The Chief Medical Director of UUTH, Prof. Ememabasi Bassey, strongly condemned the aggressive tactics used by the federal agents, confirming that the medical report was indeed a fabrication created by outside elements.
"We have seen many fake medical reports supposedly issued by this hospital. The letterhead used was an old one and did not come from any official source," Prof. Bassey explained. "At no point did they come to look for the CMD, the CMAC or the Director of Administration. They simply went to his office."
In response, the EFCC released a counter-statement claiming that their operatives acted with absolute professionalism and were instead locked inside the complex and attacked by an aggressive group of hospital workers.
Following the chaotic confrontation, the local chapters of the Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria have launched an industrial strike action, demanding a formal public apology from the anti-graft agency and compensation for injured workers.
