Political parties in Nigeria faced a frantic race against time on Saturday to submit their updated membership registers to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The rush preceded the midnight deadline, a critical requirement under Section 77(4) of the Electoral Act 2026, which mandates submission at least 21 days before primary elections.
The Labour Party (LP) reported an "unexpected surge" in membership registration, particularly in Northern Nigeria.

LP National Publicity Secretary Ken Asogwa noted that the party has seen more registration activity in the North than in the South, excluding Abia State.
Meanwhile, the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) and the Social Democratic Party (SDP) both confirmed they have met and surpassed the minimum membership thresholds.
According to Qubes Magazine, the submission of these digital registers is vital for verifying the authenticity of party members and ensuring democratic processes during congresses.
Parties like the NDC and APGA also confirmed compliance, aiming to avoid the disqualification of their aspirants as the 2027 political cycle heats up.
