The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a middle-aged scrap iron dealer identified as Adamu Abdullahi for allegedly orchestrating and staging his own kidnapping in a calculated bid to extort N1.5 million from his employers.
The criminal breakdown was made public by the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Tijani Fatai, during a security briefing on Tuesday, May 26, 2026.
The case initially began as a missing person investigation on May 19, when a concerned relative named Abubakar filed a report at a local police division detailing that Abdullahi could not be located.
Shortly afterward, a distressing video emerged online depicting the scrap dealer being beaten with wooden planks by hooded individuals who threatened to execute him unless his employer, Lawal Abubakar, paid a ransom of N1.5 million.

However, sophisticated digital forensics and medical evaluations conducted by tactical detectives upon Abdullahi’s sudden return home revealed a total lack of visible physical trauma or tissue lacerations.
Under intense cross-examination, the suspect cracked and confessed that the entire kidnapping scenario was a hoax filmed inside a local workshop.
He named his co-conspirators as Adelowo Olalekan Akorede (35) and Yusuf Lukman (39), who have both been arrested, while another accomplice remains at large.
Abdullahi further admitted that he resorted to the fake abduction plot to cover up his illegal diversion of N490,000 previously entrusted to him by his boss for scrap transactions.
