Benin Queen and Palace Officials Face Sanctions After TikToker Peller’s Unauthorised Visit
The Benin Traditional Council (BTC) has announced potential disciplinary actions, including the removal of a Palace Queen, following a breach of protocol involving popular social media influencer Habeeb Hamzat Adelaja, known as Peller.
The council described Peller’s March 6 visit as a "desecration" of the sacred precincts of the Oba of Benin’s palace.
In an official statement released on Tuesday, BTC Secretary Frank Irabor detailed how Peller and his entourage allegedly gained access to the palace without the necessary permission from the council.
The incident has caused significant embarrassment to the ancient institution, leading to the indefinite suspension of a high-ranking chief and the arrest of a BTC staff member identified as Mr. Omuemu.
"The palace is not a public thoroughfare or a location for frivolous content creation; it is the ancient and spiritual seat of the Oba of Benin," the BTC statement read.
The council confirmed that a Queen who featured in the incident is currently undergoing disciplinary proceedings which, according to Benin custom, may lead to her permanent removal.
Furthermore, the BTC has expressed regret that Peller failed to honour an invitation to explain his side of the story before a committee of chiefs.
The council is now demanding an immediate appearance and an unreserved written apology.
While the Omo N’Oba N’Edo, Uku Akpolokpolo, Oba Ewuare II, is known for a forgiving disposition, the council warned that it possesses the "institutional tools" to correct such infractions and will pursue legal action if Peller refuses to comply.
