18 Killed, Several Injured in Katsina as Bandits Launch Violent Reprisal Attack
Tragedy struck Falale village in the Jibia Local Government Area of Katsina State on Tuesday as armed bandits launched a brutal reprisal attack, leaving at least 18 people dead and several others with various injuries.
The attack shattered over a year of relative peace in the community, which had been sustained through rigorous security operations.
The violence reportedly began at approximately 12:00 p.m. following a confrontation between local vigilantes and three suspected "repentant" bandits.
According to preliminary reports, the vigilantes intercepted the suspects while on patrol, leading to a gun battle that resulted in the death of the three suspects.
In immediate retaliation, a larger group of bandits stormed the village, targeting residents in a lethal shooting spree.
The spokesperson for the Katsina State Police Command, Abubakar Sadiq, confirmed the deployment of a joint security team to the area to restore order.
"An investigation had commenced to identify and apprehend those responsible for the attack," Sadiq stated.
The State Commissioner of Police, Bello Shehu, condemned the act as "barbaric" and urged residents to remain calm while providing intelligence to aid the investigation.
In a separate response, the Katsina State Commissioner for Internal Security, Nasiru Mu’azu, commended the response of the Police, DSS, and the "C-Watch" civilian operatives.
He reassured the public that the administration of Governor Malam Dikko Umaru Radda remains unwavering in its commitment to protecting lives, despite this devastating setback in the state's security gains.
