The Chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has revealed that Turkish officials were surprised and dismissive of the media frenzy in Nigeria surrounding President Bola Tinubu's brief stumble during his official visit to Ankara. Dabiri-Erewa stated this while reacting to a social media post on Wednesday.
The incident, which occurred as President Tinubu disembarked from a vehicle, was widely reported by Nigerian media outlets but was not covered by any major Turkish news station. An X user, Equityoyo, highlighted this disparity, prompting Dabiri-Erewa's response.
“Exactly. On ground here in Ankara, their officials were shocked to learn that it was an issue in Nigerian media / blogs,” Dabiri-Erewa wrote. She quoted a Turkish official who described the focus on the stumble as “silly and mischievous,” while emphasizing that their media was instead focused on the “incredible success” of the bilateral visit.
The NIDCOM boss's comments underscore the differing news priorities and the sometimes disproportionate attention given to minor incidents in Nigerian public discourse.
