Former Spain national team coach Robert Moreno has vehemently denied allegations that he used the artificial intelligence tool ChatGPT to make coaching decisions during his tenure at Russian club FC Sochi. The 48-year-old refuted the claims in an open letter to Spanish newspaper Marca.
Reports in Russian media had suggested Moreno relied heavily on AI for match preparation, line-ups, and even player signings before his departure from Sochi in September 2025. Moreno called the reports “completely false,” attributing them to a former club executive with whom he had disagreements.
“I have never used ChatGPT or any AI to prepare matches, decide line-ups, or choose players. That is completely false,” Moreno wrote. He clarified that while his coaching staff utilizes standard analytical technology like GPS, Wyscout, and video platforms, all sporting decisions are made by humans.
“My career in football began precisely through data and video analysis... Technology helps process information faster, but the sporting decisions are always made by the coaching staff,” he explained.
Moreno, who also had spells at Monaco and Granada, served as Spain’s head coach in 2019 after Luis Enrique resigned due to his daughter’s illness. His reinstatement was short-lived, as Luis Enrique returned months later, accusing Moreno of disloyalty for wanting to stay in charge for Euro 2020.
