The Edo State Police Command has commenced an investigation into allegations of missing body parts from a corpse deposited at a mortuary along Upper Sakponba Road, Benin City, following a disturbing incident that nearly triggered mob violence.
The command’s Public Relations Officer, Eno Ikoedem, confirmed the development in a statement on Tuesday, noting that the situation caused public outrage after family members discovered that a corpse entrusted to a private mortuary had allegedly been tampered with.
According to Ikoedem, the police received an urgent distress call on December 12, 2025, reporting that a mortuary attendant was about to be lynched by an angry crowd over allegations of organ harvesting. Acting swiftly, officers from the Ugbekun Division were deployed to the scene to rescue the suspect and restore calm.
“On December 12, 2025, the Command received an urgent distress call indicating that a mortuary attendant was on the verge of being lynched by an irate crowd over allegations of organ harvesting. Acting swiftly, the Divisional Police Officer of Ugbekun Division mobilised operatives to the scene and successfully rescued the suspect, thereby averting a breakdown of law and order,” Ikoedem stated.

She explained that preliminary investigations revealed that one Marvelous Odeh and other relatives had visited Akugbe Mortuary to retrieve the corpse of a family member, identified as the late Uyi Enogieru, in preparation for burial. However, after completing the necessary documentation, the family allegedly discovered that the body had been unlawfully tampered with and that some body parts were missing.
The shocking discovery prompted the family to immediately alert the police, triggering tension within the area and attracting a crowd to the mortuary premises.
Ikoedem disclosed that the suspect has since been taken into custody, while the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) on the directive of the Commissioner of Police, CP Monday Agbonika, for a thorough and discreet investigation.
“The Edo State Police Command assures members of the public that no stone will be left unturned in uncovering the truth and ensuring that anyone found culpable is brought to justice in accordance with the law,” she said.
The police spokesperson also warned members of the public against taking the law into their own hands, urging residents to remain calm and allow the authorities to carry out a comprehensive investigation into the matter.
The incident adds to growing public concern over alleged organ harvesting cases and highlights the need for stricter oversight of private mortuaries across the state.
