The Kehinde Oshilaja Foundation has raised alarm over what it described as the “increasing politicisation” of the selection process for traditional rulers in Yoruba communities, warning that such interference could undermine cultural heritage and destabilise local governance.
In a statement issued on Sunday by the group’s coordinator, Kehinde Oshilaja, the foundation stressed that the appointment of monarchs had historically been guided by the Ifa oracle, not political considerations. It noted that government meddling in such matters had already triggered conflicts in several Yoruba towns.

“Politically-appointed obas may be ignorant of the dos and don’ts of the land, and this ignorance threatens the integrity of our heritage,” the statement read.
The foundation also appealed to traditional rulers to prioritise the welfare of persons living with disabilities, stating that genuine leadership should combine cultural preservation with compassion for vulnerable groups.

It urged both state and federal governments to respect traditional hierarchies across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones, warning that continued political involvement in chieftaincy matters could ignite avoidable tensions.
In addition, the group honoured philanthropist Orisanla Oseremagbo for his dedication to community development, calling on other wealthy individuals to emulate his example in uplifting local communities.
Concluding its statement, the foundation prayed for the prosperity of Lagos State and lasting peace across Nigeria, while reiterating its call for a return to culturally authentic, unbiased monarch selection processes.
