The Federal Government has issued a warning for heavy rains and potential flooding across 22 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in Nigeria.

According to the National Flood Early Warning Systems Centre of the Federal Ministry of Environment, the predictions cover two periods: August 30 to September 2, 2024, and September 2 to 3, 2024.
States expected to experience significant rainfall and possible flooding include Adamawa, Bauchi, Borno, Gombe, Jigawa, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Kebbi, Plateau, Rivers, Niger, Sokoto, Taraba, Yobe, Zamfara, Kogi, Nasarawa, Ebonyi, Benue, Enugu, Cross River, and the FCT. The government advises communities downstream of Jebba to evacuate due to rising water levels in the River Niger.

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) reported that flooding has caused 192 fatalities across 29 states, emphasizing the need for urgent preparedness and response to prevent further loss of lives and properties.
