A brand specialist and principal, Alder Consulting, Mr Leke Alder, has advised dentists to explore the entrepreneurial aspect of dentistry.
Alder said this, according to a statement by Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, at the 16th Annual Faculty of Dentistry Conference and 50th Anniversary of the College of Health Sciences, OAU, Ile-Ife, titled, ‘Dentistry without borders.’
Alder, who spoke on ‘The awesome treasures in dentistry,’ highlighted the importance of entrepreneurship in the dentistry profession.
He said, “Some people are better off in a partnership than on their own. If you are going to go into business, at least draw a plan.
“A dental practice is a business and there are so many business plan templates available on the internet. I bet you will find one for the dental practice. You will need to learn how to build an administrative structure, learn to manage your cash flow, and how to market your service. The idea is to reduce the possibility of failure.”
A Professor of Archaeology, Adisa Ogunfolakan, also said Nigeria did not keep records of the teeth that had been removed by dentists in the past generations.
Ogunfolakan maintained that record-keeping of removed teeth would help proffer solutions to problems associated with teeth.
He said, “No record keeping on teeth that have been removed by dentists in the past generations to see the nutritional changes.
“Dentists must work with historians; doing this will help to generate data for action plans”.
In her welcome address, the Dean, Faculty of Dentistry, Prof. Morenike Ukpong, said that the Faculty of Dentistry of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, was the first and only university in Nigeria to organise a Faculty Conference, adding that this was over two decades ago.
The Chief host who is also the Vice-Chancellor of OAU, Ile-Ife, Prof. Adebayo Bamire, applauded the initiatives of the organisers, saying the conference had the sole purpose of achieving positive landmarks.
Speaking from the cultural aspect, Prof. Jacob Olupona, of African Religious Tradition and American Studies in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Harvard University, USA, complained that the unemployment rate in Nigeria was worrisome.
Prof. Onikepe Folarin of the Redeemers University, Osun State urged the government to make policies that would help researchers in their works. Punchng
