President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has summoned an emergency session of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) scheduled for Tuesday, July 15, 2025, to honour the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away in a UK hospital on Sunday.
In an emotional tribute personally signed by the President, Tinubu expressed deep sorrow over Buhari’s passing, describing him as “a patriot, a soldier, a statesman,” who led Nigeria with “quiet strength and profound integrity.”
“As a mark of respect to our former leader, I have directed that all national flags fly at half-staff across the country for seven days from today,” Tinubu announced.
He further stated, “I have also summoned an emergency Federal Executive Council session on Tuesday, dedicated to his honour.”
The President praised Buhari’s contributions to the nation, both as a military Head of State from 1984 to 1985 and as a democratically elected President from 2015 to 2023. He emphasized Buhari’s unwavering commitment to fighting corruption and restoring discipline in public service.
“President Buhari was to the very core, a patriot… He championed discipline, confronted corruption head-on, and always placed the country above personal interest,” Tinubu wrote.
The tribute also extended heartfelt condolences to Aisha Buhari, the late President’s wife, their children, and the entire Buhari family. Tinubu also acknowledged the support and mourning of Daura Emirate in Katsina State, Buhari’s hometown.
President Tinubu assured that the Federal Government would organize a befitting state funeral to honour Buhari’s legacy and service to the nation.
“We honour his service. We reflect on his legacy. And we pray for the peaceful repose of his soul,” Tinubu wrote. “May Allah forgive his shortcomings and grant him Al-Jannah Firdaus.”
