US President Donald Trump has halted planned military strikes against Iranian coastal assets and naval targets along the Strait of Hormuz, opting to give high-stakes diplomatic negotiations another opportunity.
Mediation efforts led by Oman Foreign Minister Badr al-Busaidi—alongside envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, and regional partners Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Egypt—are focused on establishing a sustainable maritime safety framework and reopening the vital shipping lane.
Under proposals currently being negotiated, coastal states including Iran and Oman could collect standard maritime safety and environmental protection service fees from transit vessels, structured similarly to protocols used in the Strait of Malacca.
