The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has reaffirmed that its ban on small-volume and sachet alcoholic beverages remains absolute, with enforcement operations active across Nigeria.
Speaking in Enugu on Friday, Dr. Festus Ukadike, NAFDAC Zonal Director for the South East, confirmed that regulatory sweeps targeting manufacturers, distributors, and retailers of sachet alcohol are ongoing.
Ukadike emphasized that the policy is designed to protect underage children from early exposure to alcohol, which contributes to antisocial behavior and heightened health risks like cancer.

Addressing economic concerns from small business owners, NAFDAC clarified that companies may still produce alcoholic beverages, provided the packaging volume is no less than 200ml per container. Arrests and product confiscations have already been executed across Enugu, Imo, Abia, Ebonyi, and Anambra states.
While public reaction to the enforcement remains mixed—with some low-income consumers raising affordability concerns—NAFDAC maintained that public health imperatives supersede commercial interests. The agency projects that within 12 months, all alcohol packaging under 200ml will be completely phased out of the Nigerian market.
