Political Realignment: Factional Friction Deepens Within Obidient Structure Over Neglected Welfare and Strategic Pivots to Ruling Class
The foundational framework of Nigeria’s primary alternative political vanguard is experiencing severe internal fragmentation as core grassroots mobilizers seek new structural alliances.
While national coordinators maintain that the base remains unyielding and locked behind its 2023 presidential ticket, frontline operational figures argue that a total breakdown in logistics funding has compromised the movement's sustainability.
The unfolding administrative schism highlights a growing disconnect between digital media rhetoric and the hard, financial realities of long-term grassroots political engineering.
According to Arise News online, the Convener and self-identified "Obidient General" of the movement's emerging breakaway faction, Ikenna Azomchine, has confirmed a catastrophic crack within the leadership structure.
Azomchine revealed that a major wing of the grassroots network has officially resolved to defect and align their structures with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.
He disclosed that factional leaders have already initiated strategic consultative meetings with the president's son and various "City Boys" solidarity groups to establish a direct channel for youth re-engagement and policy input.
The factional chief, who heavily financed and coordinated Peter Obi’s foundational European Union diplomatic tour to Brussels in 2022 before following the campaign across difficult terrain like Maiduguri and Sokoto, traced the split to an absolute lack of financial synergy from their principal.
Azomchine detailed that despite spending massive personal resources to keep the network alive post-2023, local mobilizers fell into deep financial distress, unable to fund basic operational logistics or secure family obligations.
He alleged that during an early morning intervention at Obi's private residence in Onitsha to request intervention for stranded, out-of-pocket members, the leadership offered empty reassurances while entirely ignoring the physical infrastructure of the movement.
Azomchine dismissed statements by the recognized national coordinator, Dr. Yunusa Tanko, who had previously labeled breakaway elements as selfish defectors, asserting that the operational strength of the Obidient youth wing relies entirely on the coordinators who manage the field.
He pointed out that the faction's autonomous strength was already demonstrated during regional elections, such as the Anambra gubernatorial race, where his network independently backed Chukwuma Soludo over the official party option.
The breakaway convener concluded that while Peter Obi has secured the 2027 presidential ticket under the newly formed Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), the lack of real institutional funding means the core grassroots will pivot their energy where domestic stability, peaceful collaboration, and active governance are realistically supported.
