President Bola Tinubu is scheduled to deliver a historic address before a joint session of the National Assembly on June 12, 2026, as the centerpiece of activities marking this year’s Democracy Day celebration.
The highly anticipated presidential address forms part of a comprehensive, nationwide commemorative itinerary officially ratified by the newly inaugurated Inter-Ministerial Committee, which is charged with coordinating the federal program.
Speaking at the inauguration of the committee on Tuesday, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, paid glowing tribute to the late Chief MKO Abiola and other iconic martyrs of the historic June 12, 1993, democratic struggle.
Akume emphasized that the 2026 anniversary offers a profound window for citizens to reflect deeply on the immense sacrifices made by patriots to institutionalize democratic governance across the West African nation.

A statement released by the SGF’s Media Aide, Yomi Odunuga, outlined an institutional timeline of events kicking off with a World Press Conference on June 4, followed by special Juma’at prayers on June 5, an inter-denominational church service on June 7, and a public lecture on June 9.
Youth and women-focused empowerment initiatives will follow on June 10, leading up to the national presidential broadcast and a grand Democracy Day Gala Night on June 12.
SGF Akume added that while the Tinubu administration will utilize the avenue to showcase its reformatory achievements and democratic consolidation, the festivities will remain strictly "modest but purposeful" in absolute alignment with the federal government's policy on fiscal responsibility.
