South African President Cyril Ramaphosa is trending globally after launching an urgent, high-stakes legal bid in the Western Cape High Court to completely strike down the independent panel report that threatens his presidency with a public impeachment inquiry.
The dramatic move comes right on the heels of a massive political development: National Assembly Speaker Thoko Didiza officially appointed a 31-member parliamentary impeachment committee to probe the infamous 2020 Phala Phala farm scandal.
This committee was revived after the Constitutional Court recently ruled that parliament’s previous attempt to bury the issue was unlawful.
The original Section 89 independent panel report, led by former Chief Justice Sandile Ngcobo, concluded there was a prima facie case to answer regarding the hundreds of thousands of dollars in undeclared foreign currency hidden inside a sofa at Ramaphosa's private game farm.

In a 62-page founding affidavit, Ramaphosa has aggressively hit back, asking the court to review, declare unlawful, and set aside the report before the impeachment committee can turn the findings into a public trial.
The president argues that the panel heavily misunderstood its mandate, misjudged the threshold for "serious misconduct," and improperly relied on "hearsay" information provided by former spy boss Arthur Fraser, including potentially unlawfully obtained audio recordings and Namibian police documents.
Ramaphosa has formally warned the National Assembly that if they do not halt the impeachment steps while this court challenge is pending, he will be compelled to seek an immediate court interdict against them.
